When it comes to LEGO magazines we have plenty of choice, covering some of the most popular themes out there, Star Wars, Marvel, City, Ninjago, Friends, and of course DC.
As always, roughly half way into each month, we get inundated with magazine releases and usually feel balled-over and can’t decide which ones to pick up first or even at all. Even here at The Brick Post we pick and choose which ones to grab and review, there are just too many at times!
We especially like issues that offer something new and exciting, be it a small build or an exclusive/sought-after Minifigure. What we don’t like is a re-release of older foil packs (the bag in which the freebie comes in), unless it is accompanied by a new Minifigure such as this months issue (15) of the highly popular LEGO Batman Superhero Legends magazine.
The Magazine:
As usual with all LEGO magazines I usually run through all the puzzles and activities contained within the current issue but I somewhat sad to say there just isn’t as many in this one as previous iterations, it focuses on a more in depth comic story.
The story features Batgirl, the Minifigure included with the magazine, and Robin who plan a daring rescue mission to save Batman from Arkham Asylum, their first encounter is with the villain known as Penguin.
I must say that having the Minifigure freebie be the star of the story is a great way to get younger fans interested and to play along, acting out most of the scenes from the comic. If you have a few of Batman’s villains it makes the whole experience more enjoyable, defeating them with Batgirl’S Ultimate Grappling Hook!
As I mentioned earlier there is a lack of puzzles and activities but there are a few dotted around the Magazine, just not as many as previous issues.
First up is a game called Robin’s Training, its purpose is for you to knock all the trophies off their stands with the roll of a dice. Rolling a 5 or 6 instantly knocks a trophy off, the aim is to roll consecutively high numbers to see how many in a row you can do, quite challenging if you ask me.
There is another part to this game that requires you to find all of Batman’s Batarangs and draw straightlines in the direction on the white arrows. It ultimately points to a trophy.
The next activity is one of my young Son’s favourites, he loves to doodle and colour in pictures, especially if it’s a Superhero.
Again the villains have played a trick and stolen all the colour from Batman and his Batmobile, its up to you to add a splash of colour back into the picture. Although Batman only works in black, and very very very dark grey!
Another notable mention is the series of puzzles that Cyborg has to get through in order to break into Joker’s hiding place.
The first problem to solve is a mini maze, followed by figuring out which way the end cog will turn, and finally cracking the 4 digit code which is scattered all over that page.
My Son has great fun working through and completing this puzzle and finally busting Joker!
We particularly like seeing the real life LEGO sets scattered throughout the issue, one being the recent LEGO Batwing (76161) set.
The Minifigure:
Onto the freebie now and in this Superhero Legends Issue we get two for almost the price of one, as usually they come in at around £3.99, where as this double issue was £4.99, not too bad considering you get two awesome Minifigures!
The main attraction to pick this up lies solely on the inclusion of Batgirl. She is somewhat sought-after and before the release of this magazine sold for around £15, hence my earlier comment in regards to not being too badly priced.
Batgirl comes packed with the Ultimate Grappling Hook as her accessory/weapon and you can see her using it in the comic story.
It’s made up of a handful of parts and for the most parts looks good, it does however keep breaking in half, but that’s what LEGO does so we can allow it, just.
The Minifigure itself looks amazing and is identical to the one found in both LEGO Batman vs. The Joker: Batmobile Chase (76180) and LEGO Mobile Bat Base (76160).
Her torso has a cool design and the printing is again outstanding as always. It features her Bat emblem in yellow, the colour continues onto the utility belt and around to the back where some sort of bag or strap is, it almost looks like a parachute.
Unfortunately there isn’t any printing on the legs and are left plain grey. In my opinion this is OK as I think any more details would make the whole Minifigure look crowded and too much going on.
She has two faces, both with her blue mask on, one side we get a big cheesey smile while on the other is a cool crime-fighting smirk.
It’s quite rare to get a Cape piece in foil bags and especially one so cool looking as the one here. Unlike most capes this one has a single hole which slots over the neck stud and once the head and hair piece goes on it gets pushed down into place. The material of the Cape is a cross between paper and fabric and has hard creasing and springs back up if you remove the hair.
The extra freebie that came with my issue of the magazine was Joker in his prison overalls. I’ve heard of there being a few other alternatives, which include an armoured Batman Minifigure, depending on which store you shop at, I picked my copy up from WHSmith, here in the UK.
I won’t go too much into this freebie as it has been seen before and is nothing new, unless you missed out on it first time round.
The Joker is sporting rison overalls with Arkham Asylum printed on the front & back. Iust say that I really like the torso and legs and willost likely pop them in my Mini Minifigure Station fr use later.
He comes with his signature hair piece and head that we’ve seen countless times before.
He comes with a tiny catapult that launches, what I presume to be, bombs, which it does quite well. If you managed to catch my live stream on Instagram last week you’d have seen it in action.
Conclusion:
Overall the magazine is a hit with the intended audience and the comic story is very well done, both my Son and I enjoyed reading it.
Not a lot of puzzles but just enough toake it worth while, and the quality is still there and it shows.
The Batgirl Minifigure is incredible and well worth the price tag of £4.99, with the added extra foil bag it’s a no brainer really.
The design and print is at LEGO’s high standard and the colours work really well together. The whole Batgirl Minifigure is awesome and should be in your collection of not already!
Here’s a sneaky peek at next issues freebie, featuring the Joker and his Glue Blaster!
