Howdie Partners – It’s Brick McBricksworth here with another review for The Brick Post. Today, we are out in the Wild West with our favourite lighting brick brand, Funwhole! Embrace the American cowboy adventure with the “Old West Freight Train”. But before we get into the review lets get the all import stats shall we:

  • Set number F9036
  • 1524 pieces
  • 16+
  • Full Printed parts

The Box & Contents:

Box art first, the artwork is both crisp and clean and really well printed, it is right up there with some of the best box art I have seen and I have tried a lot of brands and own a lot of set.

The instructions are very, very easy to follow. Well laid out and really well printed and the paper quality is top tier!

Numbered bags. Sounds like an obvious one, but believe me some brands out there still don’t do this part well. Not FUNWHOLE, they have this one locked down!

The Quality:

Brick quality, I hear a lot of people don’t veer from the brand leader mainly because of this, but honestly the quality of the bricks are top level. Colours and feel are exactly what you would want from a quality brand. The clutch power of the bricks is just right in this set. I have had FUNWHOLE sets before and the bricks in those were a bit on the stiff side if I am totally honest. They didn’t work loose but at the same time they couldn’t be taken apart easily should you want to have the fun of rebuilding. I can see this feedback has been noted in the past by FUNWHOLE and now the bricks clutch just right!

So what do you get in this set?

You get a highly detailed old American Western classic 4-4-0 steam freight train, complete with log trailer and a superb looking main carriage. Which has some awesome play features like moving sliding doors and easily detachable roof so you can get your hands in and play out your favourite western scenes inside.
Also included as a side build (which is quite substantial itself), it has a water tower where you can pose your train engineer as he fills up the water in the train etc.
it doesn’t stop there you get enough track to house your train and carriages on for display.

Not to beat around the bush but this build is massive and really well designed and what you will be getting for your money, in my opinion is more than worth every penny. Looking at this box there must be a lot of really annoying stickers… NOPE! No stickers in sight here. This one is all printed straight on to the pieces and really well done too.

FUNWHOLE now do their own figures and in this set you get 6. These are well printed and appear to be good quality. They are modelled a bit on the leading brand but look original enough to be their own style. I’m torn on these as there are parts of the figs I think are great and some bits I am not too sure of just yet. I suspect in time they will grow on me.

So if you are in to your old western movies where the bandits are causing havoc on the train and in the town, this FUNWHOLE Theme is for you. For the younger generation you could play out your favourite parts from popular Red Dead console games.

So what elevates FUNWHOLE?
In recent times we have all seen how amazing a light kit can work with bricks but usually you have to buy these separate from your set. Costing you even more money. Not the case with Funwhole, they are the leaders in lighting brick sets because the light kits come in the set the instructions are tailored to include these as you build, rather than having to pry apart parts of the set risking it’s rigidity etc. This in turn makes installing lights a doddle rather than a daunting task that makes you feel like you need an electricians course, FUNWHOLE have now even gone to the extent of creating specialist bricks and plates to hide the cables even better than ever before in a set. These not only make the cables hide away better they are shaped so when you place them togeteher they have channels for the wires so they don’t get damaged in the install. This also vastly aids with the clutch power of the bricks and plates. This has to be the part of the set I found most useful!

The first few bags consist of the main Freight train then you move on to the log truck, then in later bags you make the passenger carriage. Then it’s the water tower and finally the track.

The Story

“This is their final heist before calling it quits—robbing a treasure from a wealthy merchant on a

train. Bandit Bill and his gang (the outlaws waiting at the train station) once ruled the entire West, but

now they’re on the run, scattered during their escape. Bandit Bill, growing impatient, decides to

take matters into his own hands. The train rushes towards him, and from afar, he spots the familiar

figures of cowboys on board. Will he succeed?

  1. Hello!

    I have some questions.

#1 – is it motorized? I’ve seen a couple of videos of it running on tracks, but have seen no mention of a motor.

#2 – what if I want to add more cars to it? Will Funwhole be selling individual cars? Are the other brands compatible?

    1. Hi. It doesn’t come with a motorbut it would be easy as pie to motorise, swap out the light battery pack for a motor 🤔

FunWhole suggest buying more sets to adapt into extra cars and it’s the same gauge as LEGO trains so is compatible.

  2. Ive seen a train station for it but can’t find it on the website

    1. Hi, the Western Train Station should be released late September or early October. We will be receiving a review copy so watch this space to learn more about it 🤩
