The LEGO Horizon Adventures game has had mixed reviews, I personally haven’t played it yet due to the high price tag, but being a fan of the original two games, Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, I really should grab the LEGO version of it. In the mean time the newest set to drop inspire by it has dropped and I just had to grab myself a copy!
Going back to 2022, not far I know but still, with the release of the LEGO Tallneck (76989) set that started it all off. This one sits proudly on display amongst my collection and rightly so, it stands tall and looks awesome too. How it took LEGO so long to make another set is crazy, but finally they listened, kind of, to fans and gave us Aloy & Varl vs Shell-Walker & Sawtooth (77037).
The Box & Contents:
The box is a reasonable size for a set that retails for £39.99, it’s also comes with 768 pieces, which is quite substantial. Inside the box are 6 numbered bags and two instruction manuals, there aren’t any printed or stickers elements here, just the 2 Minifigures.
Having 2 manuals allows you to built with a family member or friend, which is a nice touch. The LEGO Horizon Adventures game is 2 player coop so this makes complete sense and one I’m a fan off. I did ask my Son if he wanted to build with me but all I got was a grunt as he wandered upstairs to his room. It’s fine though as I don’t personally like to share my LEGO, it’s all mine, My Precious!
The Builds:
Bags 1 through 3 are the smaller landscape side builds which are only made up of a handful of parts. There’s a sandy area with a campfire and chest and a long-grassed area in which Aloy and Varl can hide in to escape the Machines gaze. The part usage is good and you get the general idea of what each section represents, so the designers did a good job here. Again for a set of this size it’s nice to see smaller side builds being introduced, even if they won’t necessarily be used or displayed alongside the main set.
The Shell-Walker is also constructed in these first few bags, this machine is fun to put together and has a few interesting techniques to-boot. From a game point of view you know exact what this creature is, it’s the troublesome and hard-to-beat machine that gives you a lot of scraps and other trinkets once defeated. Both aspects of the build show this, the intact and undamaged machine and the conqu one. You can remove the Shell portion and lower the limbs to achieve this, even removing some of the 3×3 mosaic-style plates to give it that battle damage look.
The next lot of bags make the Sawtooth, which is again a Machine from the game, but this time a real predator. Both attack you when seen but this beast really knows how to move, it’s quick, strong and comes out of nowhere.
This Machine build is completely different to the last, it has metal ‘fur’, jagged edges, sharp teeth and more. Popping this beauty together is also a treat and is an enjoy process, there aren’t any repetitive steps at all, just mirrored sections for each leg. I particularly like the simple but super effective articulation this thing has, the legs move in the obvious ways but the body can bend in the middle, the neck and head can pivot and the jaw can open & close.
The Minifigures:
You get two Minifigures in this set, Aloy and Varl. Both are unique to the set and it’s the first LEGO outing for Varl in Minifigure form, this is one of the reasons to pickup the set, especially if it’s on sale, the two Minifigures are outstanding!
The Aloy Minifigure is different to the one in the LEGO Tallneck set, not by much but there are differences that makes this one unique and exclusive, again another reason to pickup the set, two awesome Minifigures and two Machines.
Both come with their signature weapon and here Aloy has a brand new bow & arrow element. It’s a great addition to an already worthy set, it just makes the value that much better getting all these awesome elements, Minifigures and builds.
Overall the LEGO Horizon Adventures Aloy & Varl vs Shell-Walker & Sawtooth (77037) set is well worth the money. The builds are enjoyable and don’t really take that long to complete, two people could easily have this done in an hour. Both Minifigures are good and have a plethora of printing on them, Varl comes with a new fabric cape which is also nice.
Fans of the original games and the recent LEGO Horizon Adventures game, will appreciate this set more, but don’t let that stop you, the Machines would look good in any fans display.
Thank you for reading our review, we hope it helps you make a decision on whether or not to purchase it – we highly recommend it!
