BlueBrixx RoboCop OCP Police Cruiser (106895) Review

Today’s review is a little different, it’s an alternative brand that not only make sets that the leading brand doesn’t but it also does them extremely well. BlueBrixx are a German based company that pride themselves on compatible bricks and sets of all sizes and themes, but it’s their Pro range that I’m most interested in. One of the most recent sets is from the world of RoboCop with the OCP Police Cruiser (106895), so sit back, relax and enjoy our review.

The Box & Contents:

At first glance the box really captures the eye with it’s dark background, silver edging and futuristic lens flares and Cityscape. Around the edge you’ll find the company name, Pro theme labelling, set number, piece count (376) and of course the RoboCop branding. The OCP Police Cruiser is front and centre and just from the box art you can tell this is going to be a beauty to both build and hold. On the reverse of the box you’ll find the car at different angles, front, top and side views along with measurements and a closeup of the printed tile plinth. 

Opening the box is a very different experience to the leading brand, the opening itself is the same but the cardboard tray that slides out was a nice surprise. Of course the bricks and pieces are bagged, along with an instruction manual a ‘pop-off‘ tool wheel and pre-stickered parts.

Unlike the leading brand, the most important bits are bagged separately, as you can see from the image below the front doors and plaque come separated from the other parts, this avoids unsightly marks on both the element and print. The other reason is that the front doors are made up of multiple pieces and the sticker spans 3 of them, not a good move in my book but it works here.

The instructions are also very well made and feel more premium when compared to others. Usually physical instructions aren’t included in other BlueBrixx sets, but the Pro range comes bundled with them which is great. The steps are similar to other brands in that a handful of steps are positioned on each page, sometimes there are smaller steps crammed into gaps.

The Build:

Although the bags are numbered, they all share the same number, 1. This means you basically empty every single bag out onto the table and start building. It’s not a particularly difficult build but finding the pieces was more taxing, due to every piece being black, the car body, doors, bonnet, boots and wheels.

As usual the base of the vehicle is what you construct first and you build up from there. In a similar style to the leading brand the parts on offer are roughly the same, 1×1 plates and bricks, bigger parts and sloped elements. The clutch power is also substantial and something I didn’t notice, if the pieces were either too hard or easy to click together then it would be obvious, here though they went together very nicely…and stayed together.

Both the back and front of the vehicle are lights and bumpers, these were very pleasing to build and snap into the car. The heights especially as they have a slight angle to them which was created in an interesting, I don’t want to spoil the set for you if you purchase it, but the end result is well it and it looks amazing.

Again the front and back plates are printed and looks the part, with Michigan and a series of numbers printed onto a 1×2 blue tile. Creating the front grille is simple but great part usage, the small ‘skeleton‘ arm elements are put to good use here.

The back of the car has the same printed plate, it also has taillights that run along the back and curve around the sides. It’s a nice technique and works well for this model of car, making the whole build look absolutely gorgeous.

Inside the Police Cruiser is what you’d expect to see in any American style car. There is a mesh guard in the middle that separates the criminals from the Police Officers, a computer for searching registration plates and a sterling wheel & gear stick. The boot/truck also opens thanks to the hinges, this is a good feature and one I’ll be utilising in future photos and scenes.

As an alternative brand they have done a great job and have produced a set that holds its own against other similar sets from other brands. The build process is the same experience you’d expect from any brick set, although BlueBrixx have been the best I’ve tried so far.

You cam tell this set was designed by fans of the movies as the OCP Police Cruiser is as close as it can get to it’s on-screen counterpart from the shape to the details. This will definitely be placed into my City along with the RoboCop Minifigure from Minifigs.me.
