It’s funny how some LEGO sets aren’t on your radar until something exclusive or unique comes about, take today’s LEGO City Grocery Store (60347) set review, apart from posting about its reveal it hadn’t entered my mind let alone going on my wishlist. That is until ASDA got their hands on a joblot and decided to include a sticker sheet full of their branding!

Another contributing factor was the price being considerably reduced, how could I pass up a unique set with £20 off? I couldn’t, and I’m so glad I picked one up, its a cracking little set with retro looking Minifigures and decent accessory pieces.

Set details:

  • LEGO City Grocery Store (60347)
  • RRP £54.99
  • 404 pieces
  • Retiring soon!

The Box & Contents:

The box design is bright and colourful and continues the tradition of modern City sets, with its blue left corner and fun image background. On the front there is the fully completed set as well as the Minifigures that are going about their work and food shop.

On the back there are closeup images of a handful of Play features including the Forklift that loads and unloads goods and the Cash Machine. As this is the special ASDA edition of the set you’ll find a sash wrapped around the box with details regarding what’s included and where to place the stickers. Don’t throw this away when you get home as the stickers are located on the inside of the sash, stuck using a small round sticker.

Included in the set as standard is a smaller sticker sheet, most of these won’t get used if you intend to apply the ASDA ones. Only the vehicle licence plates are used, and possibly the ‘Open’ sign if you choose to do so.

There is one thing I noticed regarding the ASDA Stickers, they aren’t official LEGO ones, meaning they lacked the small trademark print along the bottom. The quality is OK and the adhesive seems to be roughly the same, perfect to reposition if necessary.

Inside the box there are 4 numbered bags along with a separate bag for the road and larger plates. Also inside are 2 instruction manuals, one is slightly thinner than the other.

The Build:

Having built this live on Instagram, like I do on a weekly basis, the build seemed to fly by. It was rather enjoyable which was a big surprise to me as I don’t usually purchase City sets.

From start to finish I didn’t get bored once or lose focus, granted it is a small set but still the build process didn’t drag or feel repetitive in anyway.

Bag 1 is purely for the vehicles, a small electric car and a forklift. I must say the inclusion of the small red & black car is unnecessary and could have been left out entirely, it brings nothing to the set as a whole. The forklift on the other hand is a must and a vehicle I have yet to add to my collection, well I have now obviously. The elastic band powered fork works a little too well and often flings the red pumpkin pieces high into the air!

Bag 2 makes a start on the store itself, laying down the foundations and feeling the shelves with goods. Both the 2 larger plates were used as the flooring which in turn made the store more stable and movable. The addition of curved pieces to the windows is nice and breaks up an otherwise blocky looking store.

Bag 3 fleshes out the store and builds up the walls making them much more solid. Inside we now have a fully stocked chiller with milk and orange juice. There is a fish counter and bottle recycling area.

Two 2×4 plates hang over the edge to connect to the road plate in bag 4, which also doubles up as a carpark and loading bay area.

Adding the final touches here and there of fruit crates, lights, and huge carrot sign, we have finally completed the set.

Looking closely at the sash around the box I carefully placed the ASDA branded stickers onto the set. Trying to match the locations on the image was sometimes difficult, but managed to get them down and in place. Two of the  longer stickers do span multiple bricks which is unheard of in the a world of LEGO, but to make the set as  ASDA intended it called for it.

The Minifigures:

This is where the set really shines, the 5 Minifigures that are included bring a sense of retro-ness and more importantly diversity. There is one Minifigure in particular that does this and he has a prosthetic leg. This is great and I’m so happy LEGO have decided to include and expand upon the diversity of people, it should be done more!

Other Minifigures include the store owner/worker, forklift driver, store mascot, and who I presume to be father & daughter.

The two shoppers are sporting rather retro looking torsos, with her 80s inspired tracksuit jacket and the man’s groovy lemon yellow shirt complete with triangle pattern.

There are plenty of accessories too, including a shopping trolley. If I were being picky the trolley itself a tad too big compared to a Minifigure, it’s almost head height. Scaling it down would require a new mould but I would say it’s worth it.

Overall the set is surprisingly good, add the exclusive ASDA sticker sheet into the mix and you’re onto a winner. I’d recommend picking this one up before it retires for good!

As LEGO City sets go it’s a must have for anyone that has a City and wanting to incorporate a Grocery Store into it. Although the RRP (£54.99) is a little steep for what it is the ASDA price drop makes it an amazing deal.
