It’s back, the Indiana Jones LEGO theme is back and with a total of 3 new sets!

Being relatively late to the LEGO scene, I started collecting just a few years ago, I missed out on most of the older sets, this includes Castle, Pirates, Space, Lord of the Rings, and of course the first wave of Indiana Jones. I have however been lucky enough to grab a couple off ebay but to great expense, so I’m happy LEGO have released more and started with the original films.

I put together an article of the Top Ten LEGO Indiana Jones sets here, if you fancied taking a look at my personal list, which is in order of release date.

Without further ado, here’s my review of LEGO Indiana Jones Fighter Plane Chase (77012)!

The Box & Contents:

As you can see from the image above the box looks great, with the set itself depicted on the front with a stunning backdrop. I love it when LEGO go all out and include a scene from the film as the background, here we have the dirt road on which Indy and his Father, Dr Henry Jones, is racing along trying to dodge the Plane shooting at them. Kicking up dust and driving frantically, LEGO have captured this extremely well.

Both vehicles are on the back, this time side-by-side to show the scale of each build. There are also references to the scene in which the set is based on.

Inside the box you’ll find the usual goodies, 3 numbered bags, an instruction manual and a small sticker sheet. The stickers don’t faze me here as they add a lot to the overall look of the set, with the transparent canopy frame and the camouflage on the wings. Smaller flatter parts should have been printed but in a set that retails for £29.99 you really can’t grumble.

The Build:

This set consists of 387 pieces and is split over 3 bags, the first being the classic style vehicle that is based on the Citroën 11 Légère Cabriolet, which comes straight out of the film and the scene it’s inspired by.

This car is beautiful and I can’t really fault it, for the scale the LEGO Designers have done an incredible job recreating this icon. It’s technically 8 studs wide but the inside area is just 6 wide, it allow you to pop both Indy and his Father inside, with a slight reposition of their arms that is, but they fit!

The interior is lacking somewhat though but overall the feel is very classic and minimalistic in that sense. At the back you’ll find a rather cool flat-tipped trunk, this is where Indy and his Indy Senior store their umbrella and other belongings.

Also in bag 1 is the extremely small landscape/sign side build. This utilises stickers to get the point across in a simple yet much needed way. The first is a print of a tunnel icon, underneath that is a sign that reads Berlin. I feel this could have been left out and the price point brought down slightly, but seeing as it’s included it’s an OK build which doesn’t take long at all.

Bags 2 and 3 construct the Fighter Plane, starting off with the body and later adding the wheels and wings. For a company that doesn’t make Military vehicles this Plane is great looking. I’ll admit and say I don’t know enough to justify going into detail regarding the Plane itself, what engine is should have, where in History it comes from but I can tell you what it is based on, Pilatus P-2.

From a non Military view point the Plane looks great and kept to a good scale, the wings etc don’t feel oversized. There is one aspect of the Plane I dislike, the chunky looking propeller, the Technic bracket sticks out a mile and makes the front look bulky and stubby.

The Minifigures:

Included in the set are three Minifigures, these include Indiana Jones himself along with Dr Henry Jones and a generic Fighter Plane pilot.

All three Minifigures look great but it’s Indy and his Father that take the spotlight here, with their awesome designs and prints. Indy has a new hat & hair combo piece that is very similar to the one Woody from Toy Story had.

Both have accessories, although Indy’s iconic Whip is more known than the notebook his Father has, but either way both are needed additions to compliment each character.

The generic Fighter Pilot is sporting an entirely beige outfit, the torso has a few crease marks on it but that’s about it. The character is good and needed to man the Fighter Plane so I get why he’s included, they just could have done a little better with his overall look.

Overall the set is great and a must have for not just Indiana Jones fans but vehicle fans too, the Car and Plane look cool and are pretty screen accurate, as far as brick-built vehicles go anyway.

All 3 Minifigures are nice but it’s Indy and his Father that really stand out. I’ve wanted Dr Henry Jones for years now and finally I have him in my collection.

The build was enjoyable and the Car had some interesting build techniques. I like that you can sit two Minifigures inside, just like the film!
