Exclusive interviews with LEGO Snow White model designer and the real Nick Bluetooth in Blocks magazine Issue 114

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to build we go! Blocks magazine Issue 114 features a look inside 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage with the model designer, an exclusive interview with Matthew Ewald (the actor behind Nick Bluetooth), instructions to build a goat pen and much more.

Issue 114 is available worldwide as part of a subscription or a single issue at blocksmag.com now and will be in UK stores from April 4.

We’re giving away 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage! To be in with a chance of winning, take out a subscription before May 1, 2024. You’ll be entered into a new draw every month for the duration of your subscription!

Senior Designer Ryan Baird-Van Woerkom had the enviable task of turning the central location from cinema’s first full length animated feature into a LEGO Disney set for adults. Find out how he solved the design challenges that came with taking a 2D design and transforming it into 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage.

Galidor is a theme that fans like to raise an eyebrow at – but one person has a unique perspective on the LEGO Group’s ill-fated action figure range that launched with an epic live action sci-fi TV series in 2002. Matthew Ewald was cast as Nick Bluetooth in the show and experienced the highs of being the lead in a big budget show for children – and the lows of seeing it fail due to influences outside of his control. He shares his fascinating story in an incredibly candid interview.

The goat is back! Blocks is determined not to let it get away again though, so this issue includes instructions for building a medieval farm pen. It’s flexible too – so no matter how many goats you are collecting, you can make space for all of them. There are more designer insights as Henrik Rubin Saaby explains how he continued the Castle renaissance with 10332 Medieval Town Square.

LEGO House is paying homage to the three core building systems – System, Technic and DUPLO – in the venue’s new limited edition set. Take a look at the sketch model and see how it evolved to become the finished souvenir. On the topic of systems, the first part in a new ongoing feature reveals how the foundations were laid for Modulex – a strange range of tiny bricks from the 1960s.

That barely scratches the surface of what you’ll find in Blocks Issue 114 – this month’s 116 page magazine also includes instructions for building a modern version of the classic dragon, an interview with LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya, the story of how LEGO bricks are made and much, much more.

Senior Designer Sven Franic then talks about a very different challenge – analysing the natural, irregular shape of a kingfisher and capturing it in a beautiful Icons set.

There’s one classic piece of LEGO transportation that is universally loved by fans – the monorail. Issue 111 is available worldwide as part of a subscription or a single issue at blocksmag.com and will be in UK stores from January 4. Online orders will start shipping from December 27.

We’re giving away the Pirates throwback set, 10320 Eldorado Fortress! To be in with a chance of winning, take out a subscription before the end of January. You’ll be entered into a new draw every month for the duration of your subscription!

In Issue 111, 76269 Avengers Tower is assembled and dissected – get the Blocks verdict on the enormous model. You’ll also find reviews of new sets including 80112 Auspicious Dragon, Monkie Kid 80054 Megapolis City and 10329 Tiny Plants.

There’s also an exclusive interview with the LEGO Friends team about the design and development that went into 42639 Andrea’s Modern Mansion – a set unlike any that has been released before. The feature is illustrated with concept art and unused mini-doll designs.

In addition, Blocks hears from the designers behind 21344 The Orient Express Train and 80113 Family Reunion Celebration to find out more about what the talented professionals in Billund have been up to.

Elsewhere this month you can learn about the amazing New Hashima project – it’s an enormous international collaborative build and has resulted in an awe-inspiring cyberpunk city. It makes Avengers Tower look as puny as Loki.

On the other end of the scale, a look at Febrovery focuses on the amazing space themed rovers that come rolling out of the LEGO community’s collective imagination for a whole month every year.

Within the 116-page magazine you’ll also find exclusive build instructions for three mini models, the top 10 Star Wars: The Phantom Menace sets, the story of one AFOL’s holy grail (10194 Emerald Night) and much more.

It’s not just enough to hear what Blocks thinks of the new modular building though – Senior Model Designer Chris McVeigh explains how he designed the series’ widest set for years in an exclusive interview. That’s not the only in-depth chat this month, as the LEGO House creatives reveal how they upgraded Story Lab to bring in scenes inspired by Castle, Space and Pirates.

This is an essential issue for LEGO locomotive enthusiasts, as Blocks counts down the finest engines to have rolled out of the station, then the LEGO Trains Story explains how Harry Potter and AFOLs kept the train dream alive for a new generation.

There are plenty of pirate builds to admire in a feature on Brethren of the Brick Seas, a community role-playing game that sees AFOLs building amazing ships and islands while weaving them into a sprawling narrative.
