The many themes and sets under their belt is astonishing, Town Life, Middle Ages, Cyberpunk and Farm Life to name a few. There is one collection of sets that really hit the spot though and that’s the Old West!

We all love a good Wild West movie, an Outlaw ready to duel or a sharp shooting Cowboy, especially FunWhole. They’ve based a whole theme around the American Frontier and it shows they know what us fans want from a brick-built set. From the chosen buildings and characters to the finer details and architectural traits, the FunWhole Old West series is awesome, yeehaw!

So far in the lineup we have a Saloon, Sheriffs Office, Train Station, Freight Train and a Stagecoach. Most of these are available globally, with the latter dropping very soon. There is also a General Store (pictured above) releasing soon which we have a review copy of, Stu (@brickmcbricksworth) has once again taken this on as he kindly reviewed the others in the theme for us.

Taking a lot of inspiration from movies, games and of course real life, the design of each FunWhole set really captures the look and feel of the Wild West. The wooden architecture and bold colours, the white accents on the shop fronts and the rough terrain. I particularly like the wonky wooden slats on the Saloon roof and and colour scheme of the Sheriff’s office, I may have to purchase them myself.

For anyone that loves a good Western brick set then look no further than FunWhole, they ship internationally and are usually quite speedy. I’ve had many sets from them and I’ve received them within a week, obviously times vary depending on your location and how busy they are.

Picking A Part: The Alternate Suppliers https://www.thebrickpost.com/alternative-brand/picking-a-part-the-alternate-suppliers/ https://www.thebrickpost.com/alternative-brand/picking-a-part-the-alternate-suppliers/#respond Sun, 10 Nov 2024 16:48:26 +0000 https://www.thebrickpost.com/?p=43635 After I discovered the quality and joy of building with alternate brands earlier this year, I’ve been looking around to source parts for MOCs. At first I was still a bit on the fence because alternate brands had a bad reputation. After reading a bit online I decided to give a couple a try with some small orders to see what I would get. Below I’ll give an overview of some of these experiences and give the pros and cons for each of them. None of these suppliers have sponsored any orders.

BlueBrixx

When ordering sets from BlueBrixx I occasionally added some parts packs. And honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. They have some really nice parts not available from the others mentioned here, or the obscure Danish brand some people may be familiar with. The clutch for the parts is very tight and strong. However, the color compatibility isn’t fully on par with others. White bricks have a bit of a bluish appearance when used together with other brands. The prices vary wildly. Sometimes you get a great price for parts when calculated per piece, other times it will be a lot cheaper to just use Bricklink. With BlueBrixx you can only buy part packs in predetermined (bulk) quantities. Unless you live in Germany of course, where their stores have a parts service similar to PaB walls. This means you might have to buy somewhere between 10-200 pieces per pack while you might not need quantities that big.

Another negative is the availability of parts. Recently I noticed that a lot of parts had disappeared from their website. So this makes me question if long term availability of their parts is secure enough to switch over to this brand (and therefore I tried out the others in this article).

But the parts I did get were really nice, to show some of the highlights:

The black rings can be used to reverse plates or tiles to build in different directions. The green and trans-clear (hard to see) double plates have a similar function. The reddish brown octagonal plates are useful for trees etc. and the bushes I needed in tan for a build buying a used one on Bricklink was almost as expensive as buying 20 new ones from BlueBrixx and to be honest I can’t tell the difference. The white one is weird however, since it has a bit of a weird color and shape.

The best thing they have is the flextube cable. Building with flextubes can be really good, but the tubes can be expensive and hard to get. So buying a 5 meter cable and cutting it at needed sizes is a really good solution. It’s perhaps slightly less rigid compared to other brands but it’s good enough to build with.

Webrick standard parts

Webrick standard parts are the cheapest and fastest way to get bricks from them. The parts are from unspecified manufacturers and it sometimes shows a bit. The consistency can lack at times but I wouldn’t call it bad quality though.

An easy example are these reddish brown stud shooters with quite some color variation. In this case it’s not an issue for me, I’ll be using these for tree trunks and the variation adds a bit of character.

For future purchases however I’ll be mindful however that inconsistencies like these can occur with standard parts. Therefore I’ll be more inclined to pick premium parts if the option is there. In some cases however, certain colors or parts are not available as premium parts. I got dark orange and medium nougat leaves from standard parts as well. The color difference with medium nougat is a bit bigger compared with dark orange, but it’s not horrible to be honest.

The website for Webrick is very user friendly. It’s easy to find parts. It’s a bit cheecky perhaps, but often LEGO part numbers and Bricklink color codes are used to help find exactly the parts you want.

With my first order there was a mistake made with one of the lots, but customer service sent me replacement parts without any problems.

Webrick premium parts

When I first ordered from Webrick, the difference between standard and premium bricks was quite unclear. It was just marketed as better compatibility, whatever that was supposed to mean. It wasn’t clear what brand those bricks were and there were some strange things like having to order in quantities of 40 (or a 1kg bulk). But there were some parts available in unique colors which I’m happy I bought.

Recently however, a major change was made. Premium bricks are now Go bricks. These might just be the best bricks currently available. The clutch is tight and strong, plates don’t have the clear markings from the molding process like some other brands like Bluebrixx have, and colors are similar to the notorious Danish brand. It’s because of this great quality that companies like Mould King and Funwhole (hihi) and a few others rely on Go bricks for their sets. So the news of this switch was quite exciting, since I was already looking for a good Go bricks seller having read about their reputation.

Gobricks colors are basically the same as LEGO and they have a few more of their own colors

Premium bricks do have a longer handling time at Webrick compared to standard parts but great care is taken of orders. Most lots are placed in separate ziplock bags (see pictures for impression of packaging) making it easy for those who don’t like to sort. The price is probably the best I could find for Go bricks too. If you Google a bit or subscribe to their newsletter you will find plenty of good discount codes. A small warning with their newsletter: they go a bit overboard with this, it seems like I get mail from them every other day or so.

Because Go Bricks is a brand with a good reputation their bricks are not the cheapest you can find, but still cheaper than most of us will be used to. Shipping is not free, but in my case probably similar to using Bricklink.

mygobricks.com

Since I’ve already discussed the quality of Go Bricks, I can be short here and just mention the difference in ordering and delivery compared to Webrick. The packing is quite different, everything is in 1 bag and you have to sort yourself. A lot more eco friendly of course because less plastic bags are used. And to be honest, I quite like sorting these kind of orders because I can have a good look at the parts and already get inspired what to do with them. So for me that’s a big plus for mygobricks.com.

The shipping is a bit faster as well, I ordered similar sized orders from them and Webrick (premium) on consecutive days and this service was about 7-10 days faster. However, the site is not as user friendly, when making changes in shopping I often got an error and color names are not the familiar ones.

And being Dutch it’s my national duty to report I couldn’t find discount codes for them online like I could for Webrick. The assortment is a bit different from Webrick premium as well, some parts they have I couldn’t find at Webrick and vice versa. In short: great service, more eco friendly and faster, but you pay a bit more for that.

Love having all these extra color options! And there are a couple more available.

Conclusion

None of these services gave me a bad experience and I can recommend all of them. There are, however, pros and cons in every case. Different people will have different priorities. I hope this blog was helpful for people considering making brick purchases from alternate brands. Happy building!

Funwhole F9033 Antique Store Review https://www.thebrickpost.com/reviews/funwhole-f9033-antique-store-review/ https://www.thebrickpost.com/reviews/funwhole-f9033-antique-store-review/#respond Sat, 31 Aug 2024 21:56:11 +0000 https://www.thebrickpost.com/?p=41582 We’re back with another Funwhole review, this time it’s the Antique Store (F9033)!

Right off the bat I want to thank the team over at Funwhole for sending me this set, I really appreciate it and genuinely couldn’t wait to build this set and pop it in my City. We’ve signed up to their affiliate program so if you want to grab this set or any others please use our link (https://www.funwhole.com/?ref=THEBRICKPOST) and 10% off code THEBRICKPOST.

Having seen this modular doing the rounds on the internet, I couldn’t wait to get it myself, having more choice when it comes to buildings is great and having built Funwhole sets in the past I knew I’d be in for a treat. So without further a-do, here’s my review.

The Box:

As boxes go this one is up there with the best, it not only looks good, it feels good too. Having a full-blown image covering the front it shows off the set incredibly well including the lights, more on them later in the reveiw. On the front you’ll find details of the set including the number F9033, the age rating 16+ and the pieces, which is an impressive 2,847. The back shows a few of the play features and closeups of the printed elements.

Inside are a ton of numbered bags, one of which are printed pieces, that’s right, no stickers at all in this set. Funwhole have also bagged the printed pieces separately to refrain them from being scratched. There is also a separate bag for the specialist bricks which accompany the light kit, again more of them later. Two premium instruction manuals are also included and do an excellent job in making the whole build experience simple and straightforward.

The Build:

Implementing a modular design, where each floor can be removed, the build is split up into sections. The first handful of bags construct the base and ground floor, the next set of bags are the first floor and so on.

I made the executive decision of building directly onto a LEGO 32×32 baseplates as I plan on placing this building into my City, ignoring the steps where is said to build onto the plates supplied. Obviously this is entirely up to you, I recommend keeping it the same as the instructions unless you too have specific plans for it.

Having only built modulars from the leading brand, I had high expectations and standards, I’m pleased to say that this particular Funwhole set didn’t disappoint. When constructing each floor and the many details inside & out, I didn’t feel the build was slow or difficult, I throughly enjoyed every step, even fitting the light kit.

Each floor has its own style and building techniques, from the reddish brown walls and architecture of the ground floor to the light tan walls and white accent on the windows of the fordt and second floors. It gives the overall build a varied but complimentary design.

On the outside you’ll see some typical items such as a brick-built sign, awning, flowers, lamppost, plant display, bench and a postbox. They are all rather simple but that’s the beauty of them, each contains a small number of parts but the outcome is great and brings the outside area to life. The side-build that really does it for me is the expensive picture being transported to the Antique Store, the 4×4 fully printed tile of a town encased in protective packaging, it’s a really good little build. The old style camera is great too, with the tripod legs and flash, I’m sure it’ll sell quickly once in the store.

Heading inside you’ll notice a giant ornate bookcase, it stands so tall that the uppers floors need to make room for it by having a balcony. It’s filled with all sorts of tickets and treasures, from crystals and books to other yesteryear memorabilia.

Other goodies inside include an old family portrait, ornaments a stain glass window, fireplace, an old piano and a ton of clocks. In the window are some Knight relics which make for a great display and should entice customers in, there is a helmet and a shield. The way each build is put together is a testament to the designer, again using minimal parts to create something that people recognise takes a special talent, the team at Funwhole have that. It’s one of the reasons why I like this set so much, the small builds and pieces I can use for photos and scenes, there’s so much going on and to see that you spot something new everytime, and I built it!

The Lights:

On to the lights now and the Star of the show. Having installed many lights kits over the years from different companies, I know my stuff! So when receiving the set I knew I was in for a treat when it came to the lights, you install as you go which is actually new to me, usually other brands require you to remove chunks of the building, pop the cables in place and squish them between the bricks. Not with Funwhole, they have specialist bricks and plates that have small grooves in them that not only hide the cables but protect them too.

Threading the cables through 1×1 and 1×4 bricks in specially cut bricks, laying cables under 1×1 and 1×2 plates to help guide them to the right place, the whole process is painless and quite an enjoyable one. Seeing the finished set light up makes you smile with the widest grin ever, I still smile now when I switch them on, we are all kids at heart.

There are two power options available, battery pack or via USB mains. I’ve opted for batteries as it allows the set to stand independently without being attached to the wall. When this set eventually goes into my City, I will most likely use the USB mains option and combine it with the other buildings. Speaking of connectivity, the small switch hub tucks aways secretly inside the set itself, via a small hole on one side.

The Figures:

The set comes with four characters, each having their own style of clothing. They are fully printed and need to be built, including the arms, hands and legs. The figures from Funwhole have changed over the past year and for the better, although I still feel they aren’t perfect. It’s hard to create something different enough from the leading brand, but I don’t think these are it. The arms are very curved, the hands are just plain odd and having to construct them fully I found myself putting limbs on backwards and on opposite sides.

The only good redeemable feature are the crisp and bright designs and prints in the torsos, that is one thing Funwhole has locked down, their ability to do a great finish on bricks and figures. As said before they are fine, just nothing special, which is a real shame as the Antique Store build is so well done.

Overall the Funwhole F9033 Antique Store set is top notch and highly recommended to pickup of you’re in the market for something different from the leading brand. The bricks are on par and the clutch power too, there honestly isn’t anything I can fault about the set at all. Avid readers of this site will know that I don’t mess around with reviews, if a set or product doesn’t live upto my expectations or it’s something I wouldn’t buy myself I would tell you, this set truly is Soemthing special and I hope Funwhole continue to produce sets of this calibre.
